  1. The Sebright (IPA: / ˈsiːbraɪt /) is a British breed of bantam chicken. It is a true bantam – a miniature bird with no corresponding large version – and is one of the oldest recorded British bantam breeds. It is named after Sir John Saunders Sebright, who created it as an ornamental breed by selective breeding in the early nineteenth century.

Records indicate that they were developed around the 19th century by a renowned scientist, Sir John Saunders Sebright. In fact, the birds got their name from the initial developer. Sebrights are neither prolific egg producers nor excellent meat birds.

    Sebright chicken is neither an outstanding meat bird, nor prolific eggs layer. They are suitable mainly for ornamental purpose. Hens rarely go broody and chicks usually have high mortality rates. Adult Sebright chickens are generally hardy and active birds, but are especially susceptible to Marek’s disease.

    The Sebright is one of the smallest bantam chicken breeds. Hens weigh around 20 ounces, while roosters weigh around 22 ounces. The American Poultry Association accepts two color variations; Gold Laced and Silver Laced. They also occur in a Buff Laced variation.
